That stiff feeling when you wake up? Totally normal—it’s just your body shaking off a long night of stillness. But if you’re dealing with acute pain that only eases after stretching, your mattress is doing more harm than good.

“If you’re waking up with back pain—that’s an indicator that your mattress isn’t supporting you,” says Dr Smycz. It points to poor spinal alignment as a common cause of morning discomfort.
